The most popular traditional decaffeinate process involves soaking the coffee beans in hot water. The coffee beans that are soaked in the hot water are steamed. After the coffee beans are placed inside the hot water, a chemical solution will be added to strip off the caffeine.

The carbon dioxide water is also commonly used to remove caffeine from the coffee bean. This method removes the caffeine by using a high pressure. It is environmentally safe and won’t produce side effects for the customers.

The Swiss water process is the purest form of decaffeinating the coffee beans. The water is used to remove the caffeine from the coffee beans instead of chemicals and activated charcoal. Decaf coffee beans refer to beans that are stripped off of their caffeine. The decaffeination of the coffee beans is done by soaking them in the water. The caffeine in the coffee beans will be dissolved after a period of soaking it in the water. You can extract the caffeine by using a solvent or activated carbon. After you have extracted the coffee beans, you can to soak the beans in decaffeinated water again. The purpose of re-soaking the coffee beans is to absorb the flavor compounds. Examples of solvent carbons include methylene chloride and ethyl acetate.

Many people often refer ethyl acetate as a natural because they are obtained from the fruits. In truth, the ethyl acetate is dangerous to health. However, there is nothing to worry about because the coffee beans are not exposed to the solvent. Most of the coffee decaffeination process is performed according to the equilibrium principles and properties of the solvent. During the decaffeination process, the chemical properties of the coffee beans are altered. The three types of processes that are commonly used to decaffeinate coffee include Swiss water process, carbon dioxide decaffeination process and sparkling water process.

Swiss water process involves soaking the coffee beans in boiled water. The caffeine is removed from the coffee beans through a activated carbon filters. The disadvantage of Swiss water process is that the flavors between the coffees are mixed during the decaffeination process.

Carbon dioxide decaffeination process stars by soaking the coffee beans in water rich in carbon dioxide. After that, the caffeine of the coffee beans is removed through the carbon filters.

The sparkling water decaffeination process is similar with the carbon dioxide decaffeination process. The only difference between carbon dioxide and sparkling water decaffeination is the medium they used to remove the caffeine from the coffee beans. In sparkling water decaffeination process, the coffee beans are soaked in sparkling water. The sparking water is highly compressed carbon dioxide.

Coffee Roaster

July 12, 2010

Coffee roaster is an essential equipment for people who want to make fresh coffee daily. With coffee roaster, you don’t have to go out and purchase the roast coffee from the store. You can save money by roasting the beans yourself. Coffee roaster is also a great way for experimenting with various coffee blends. There are two main types of coffee roasters including fluid bed roaster, and drum roaster.

In fluid bed roaster, the temperature of the coffee beans is detected by a built in thermometer. By detecting the temperature, the machine is able to control the roasting degree of the coffee beans. The degree of roasts determines the flavor, fat and color of the coffee beans. Since the heat is transferred directly to the bean, the coffee bean will be roasted in a shorter time. To roast the bean faster, you can increase the air flow. The fluid bed roaster takes about 5 minutes to roast the coffee beans. The coffee roasted by a fluid bed roaster has a non bitter taste. Fluid bed roaster is cleaner and requires lesser maintenance.

Drum roaster is larger coffee roasting equipment than the fluid bed roaster. Examples of drum roaster include Behmor and Gene Café coffee roasters. The machine performs the roasting at a slower rate. Normally, it has a capacity to roast 8 – 12 ounces of coffee. It takes about 14 – 20 minutes to roast the coffee. Modern drum coffee roaster allows you to control the roasting degree through a computer. The coffee is roasted in batches in a drum roaster. When the drum roaster is turn on, the drum will spin. As the drum spins, the warm air will transfer the heat to the drum. The drum will use to heat to roast the coffee beans. Perforated drums offer holes for the hot gasses to pass through so that the coffee can be roasted more thoroughly. Drum roaster is commonly used in commercial settings.

The cost of drum roaster is higher than the fluid bed roaster. If you want a roaster to make coffee at home, it is recommended that you buy the fluid bed roaster. Drum roaster is suitable for people who are running a coffee business. The drum roaster costs in between $300 to $3000. Depending on your budget, you should buy the coffee roasters that best suit your needs.
